Pearl Weave vs Gold Weave: Choosing a BJJ Gi Fabric for Your Academy

"Weave" refers to how the cotton fabric of a Gi jacket is woven. Pearl weave and gold weave are two familiar constructions, but the weave name alone does not tell you the finished garment weight, shrinkage or durability.
Pearl weave for academy programmes
Pearl weave has a small, textured surface and is a common choice for academy and retail programmes. It can offer a structured feel without excessive fabric weight, depending on the specified GSM, yarn, finishing and jacket construction.
Gold weave for a different fabric feel
Gold weave offers a different woven texture and hand feel. Compare a physical swatch and finished sample against the pearl weave option rather than assuming one weave will always be heavier, stronger or more suitable for every athlete.
Compare samples, not just weave names
Neither weave is objectively better for every academy. Match the choice to your training programme, climate, washing routine and price position. Record fabric composition and GSM alongside the weave, and review drying, shrinkage and comfort using the same sample-washing process.
For an academy or private-label order, specify weave, fabric weight, cut, size run, collar and reinforcement together. Confirm logo placement and packaging on the approved sample before bulk production. If the Gi is intended for competition, check the current event requirements before approving the specification.
