Pearl Weave vs Gold Weave: Choosing a BJJ Gi Fabric for Your Academy

"Weave" refers to how the cotton fabric of a Gi jacket is woven, and it's one of the biggest factors in how a Gi feels, wears and grips. Pearl weave and gold weave are two of the most widely used constructions in BJJ and judo apparel.

Pearl weave has a small, tightly woven texture that makes it relatively lightweight and quick-drying, while still holding up to grips and pulls. It's a popular choice for competition Gis and for academies that want a durable but not overly heavy option for daily training.

Gold weave uses a slightly looser, heavier construction. It tends to feel sturdier and can be a good fit for training-focused programs where durability under repeated grip and takedown drilling matters more than shaving off weight.

Neither weave is objectively "better" — the right choice depends on your academy's mix of competition and casual training, your climate (lighter weaves dry faster in humid conditions), and your price point. For academy or team orders, weave, weight and cut can all be specified together as part of your private-label spec.
